Individuals who receive more than 50% of their meals while living in the following institutions may be eligible as part of their own EDG that does not include other people residing at the institution, if they meet program requirements.

Addiction Treatment Centers

7 CFR § 273.1(b)(7)(vi)(B)


A public or private nonprofit residential facility for the treatment of drug addicts or alcoholics. The children of a resident (but not the spouse) who lives with them in the center are part of the resident’s EDG.

Group Living for the Disabled

7 CFR § 273.1(b)(7)(vi)(C)


A public or nonprofit residence that provides housing for no more than 16 disabled individuals. The resident must be disabled to be eligible for SNAP.

Homeless Shelters

7 CFR § 273.1(b)(7)(vi)(E)


A public or private nonprofit facility that provides temporary housing for homeless individuals. The EDG is defined as a single individual or an individual and their spouse and children.

Shelters for Battered Individuals

7 CFR § 273.1(b)(7)(vi)(D)


A public or private nonprofit residential facility that provides temporary housing for battered individuals. The EDG is the battered individual and their children.

Subsidized Housing for Elderly Individuals

7 CFR § 273.1(b)(7)(vi)(A)


Federally subsidized housing for elderly individuals built under either Section 202 of the Housing Act of 1959 or Section 236 of the National Housing Act. The EDG is the elderly individual and their spouse. Determine eligibility the same as any other EDG.
